There are several reasons why this is so. The main reason is because it has never been written to be Search engine friendly.
The Meta Tags have not been utilized and the 'key words' have not been inserted at the correct places in your text. You really need specialized software to help with these tasks.
The other problem is that each search engine has a different way to rank web pages.

This is a question that keeps popping up. It depends on the agreement you reached with your web designer. Often no such agreement of ownership is agreed which can lead to difficulty come such time you may want to transfer it to a new designer because of a better commercial deal. Also you may fall out with your designer for many reasons.
If you clearly have ownership you should have been given upon completion a folder with all details including your Hosting Company, Passwords, Domain Name registration and renewal dates etc. together with copy invoices.

The answer to this is primarily linked to poor search engine rankings but also to poor web site design - your shop window! Also you should be aware that most web designers may be good at designing web sites but they are invariably poor at marketing it with the search engines!
